Fluoride Treatment
Minutes
(Estimated)
Fluoride is useful in preventing tooth decay, but the fluoride that is given from toothpastes and other sources is often not enough to fully protect the teeth. Therefore, fluoride treatments are available to give teeth the extra amount that they need to stay strong and healthy.
Fluoride at a dentist’s office is given in the form of a highly-concentrated foam or varnish and applied directly to the teeth in either a swab or a tray.
It is left on for a short amount of time before it is rinsed off and the teeth are wiped clean. Eating and drinking are often discouraged for at least 30 minutes after the treatment to allow the fluoride enough time to soak into the tooth.
