Inlay, Onlay

Between something minor as filling and major as a crown are inlays and onlays, a restorative procedure done on teeth that only require a moderate amount of restoration. Inlays and onlays differ from one another based on where they are placed. Inlays refer to restorations that are done on the center of the tooth, whereas onlays repair the side and the points of the tooth.
Both inlays and onlays can sometimes be referred to as partial crowns or indirect fillings as they work to repair similar issues such as cracks, chips, and tooth decay.
Much like other procedures, inlays and onlays require a consultation to see if they are a suitable option to the patient’s needs. If they are, the procedure can proceed. A mold will be taken of the damaged tooth in order to be able to customize the inlay or onlay to the patient. The mold is then sent off to the lab to be created before being sent back to the dentist and placed in the patient’s mouth.
